LED PCB & Dimmer

Objective: Design and deliver a a dimmable LED PCB that fits their existing test jig and delivers adjustable illumination across six channels to evaluate photocatalyst performance.

Process:    

  • Self-taught Altium Designer to assume full ownership of the PCB workflow.
  • Defined a custom board outline based on the test jig’s mechanical design and positioned six high-intensity LEDs in the specified pattern.
  • Created the schematic with N-channel MOSFET drivers and potentiometer dimmers for adjustable LED brightness.
  • Hand-assembled every component on the boards and performed bench tests to confirm correct operation.

Finished Product

Results

  • Reduced lead time by three weeks through entirely in-house PCB design and fabrication.
  • Cut total cost from $1,496 to $104, a 93% reduction.
  • PCBs fit into the test jig with zero mechanical modifications.
  • The dimmer functioned to control the intensity of the LED.
